FOR HERE OR TO GO is an 8-episode documentary series that celebrates one of the most-beloved staples of American cuisine. The project will cover the overlooked stories, history, and socio-political roots of Chinese restaurants in the US and their impact on the future of Asian America.
Hosted by the author and Chinese restaurant kid, each 30-minute episode will:
- Feature a visit to a Chinese restaurant (or two) to meet with families and workers who will share heart-warming and incisive first-person accounts. Restaurants in the series will be located all around the country.
- Engage an expert on history, immigration, food, labor, and/or cultural studies, or maybe even a celebrity chef.
- Provide well-researched facts and data.
- Reflect on how a legacy of resilience has equipped these businesses - many of which are small and family owned - to navigate the current challenges post COVID and the rise in anti-Asian violence.
- Be fun and educational, and incorporate themes of equity and social justice.
